Normals are not recalculated after curve mod .

The normals of a curve modified mesh are not good even after applying the modifier …
I have to reimprot it to 3ds to have the normals correct .
Anyone who knows how to override this is wellcome !

does going into edit mode - selecting all and hitting ctrl-n (recalc normals outside) work?

Are you sure? It seems to work OK for me. Can you post an example blend?
