I have come into possession of the .ase importer for blender 2.53, however I have 2.61, and the readme for the script says to put import_ase.py into \scripts\io. But 2.61 has no such directory. How / where do I put it?

Depends on your operating system http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Extensions/Python/Add-Ons or try the Install Addon button. It won’t work anyway in blender 2.61. It will need to be updated.
