Nude Male Anatomy Study (NUDITY)

I have been working on the base mesh for the last week and a half. I’m trying to keep the poly count down and the topology pretty simple. Naturally it follows the muscle flow, but I’m kind of creating my own topology here. The nose has more polygons than necessary because when I take it into zbrush I will pull out a lot of detail in that area. I will also model every visible muscle than in zbrush. Striations will be drawn on as well with alpha maps. Yes he has a penis, its a guy. To many male cg studies omit the penis. I’m not making a uniq so the penis stays. Unless photobucket considers this pornography. Which would be in poor taste since I mean nothing sexual with this. My goal is for the model to look somewhat like the Freedom-of-teach sculpture or a Body World plastinated corpse.

Umm… to me this looks way too lumpy.

ide have to agree, looks good but all the faces seeom very square, some smoothing may be in order.

You are utilzing way too many polys at this time. Use a lower poly mesh to get the basic shape down and then start cutting in new loops, etc. and define muscles at that time.

You have very sharp edges currently at the muscle definition areas. Smooth them out and make them more subtle to get the result you are looking for.

Your proportions are also off. Make sure you have a BG image in your viewport, (even if you are not following it 100%), to ensure you keep proportions. The shouklders are way too low and small. The torso is elongated too much as well.

BgDM

It looks like some deflated male balloon or something. It feels like you just went overboard trying to make it detailed.

I took your crits in mind and added feet as well. As for deflated balloon I do not see it.

I think it’s time to drag up ye ole muscle reference sheet and start removing those lines to let it fall down a bit more naturally. Since that looks like surreal version of a fat guy, and no body wants a surreal version of a fat guy as their base mesh, now do they ?

It’s alright, but he seems more “wobbly” than muscly. Also, his “male genetalia” seems to be sticking out strangely, and seems a funny shape. I think his “testicles” are a bit too wide at the bottom and his “bell end” is a bit too small.

You love the quotation marks.

Also, his legs are waaay too short and his bum seems sharp instead of rounded. Also, the back of his knees cave in like a stretch armstrong, his spine is too defined and his shoulders are too rounded at the top. And his nipples aren’t centralised enough.

Sorry for sounding so critical, I couldn’t do anything like that, but it’s in focused critique so I thought I’d do just that.

Oh, and the bridge of his nose is too sharp, and what is that strange ridge where his hips should be?

Matt

Thanks for the crits guys! Its alright to be harsh! Just be specific!
Also if you like something let me know. I would like to know what works and what doesn’t work.
I just purchased Realistic Figure Drawing by Joseph Sheppard and Burne Hogarth’s Dynamic Anatomy today. I have been using Eliot Goldfinger’s Human Anatomy for Artist: The Elements of Form and Grays anatomy. I also subscribed to 3d.sk database of human refrence photos.

Is it alright to post sketches in a focused critique thread? Or do I have to create a seperate anatomy thread in the Traditional section? Btw there is more images of this model at Cgtalk. I have an anatomy sketch thread there for further support. I’m aiming to have the lower poly model (under 7k polys) finished by next week. I will have the main model done probably tonight, but I need to give to critical attention to some areas.

Blasted! It seems photobucket won’t tolerate nudity now. Even if its for figure anatomy studies. So it seems I need a new image hosting solution. Does imageshack allow hotlinking?

good to see you’re onto something new after your “Journey Begins” challenge.

I did a paint over for you, i hope it helps!

Actually this helps out a ton! I’m sorry you didn’t have all of the views to work from though. :mad:Blah photobucket. Huh? They are now working here now? I’m not quite sure what you did with the shoulders though. I will see how much I can clean up the geometry in those areas as well.

These will only be up for a month, than supposedly they are removed. But I should be completed the project by than. If you no any permanant solutions let me know. Slibe isn’t permanant. I changed the proportions and topology quite a bit. Its basically overal more simple. All though the hands are about 500 polys each! Yow!

his torso still looks too wide to me, also his genitalia are too far forward, it should be more between his legs.

I think I fixed the genital problem. However the head may be a proportional problem. I think the head may be to small. If enlarged to about half the width of the torso (not including shoulders) it may work. I updated a lot of features of the face here. I don’t think the topology is an issue, but if you would like to see it let me know.

Great modeling!
Always nice seeing artists paying tribute to their creator by trying to make a human form

cratiques:
the fifth limb is lacking some gurth and length in my opinion. let me look in my spam mail i think i have a product that may help him
… looks like he just sat down on a popcycle or something spooked him…

have a good day, nice work

I think this is an improvement in that area poof.

Just some updates to the overall masses and shape, but this time with a simple skin shader. This may or may not distract from observing the form. Let me know of it does. I just thought it looked cool.

The purplish pink areas on his skin don’t look too good.

The lip corners look a bit sharp.

First off the biceps do not run into the deltoids like you’ve modelled, rather flowing underneath the deltoid and pectoral muscles. The front of his shins look painfully warped and the edges under the buttocks should smooth off as it reaches the outer side of the legs. Also most of the edges and lines seem too sharp and defined if you are aiming for a realistic male model.

On the whole your model is going good, you have enough edges to get the basic forms shaped well. Keep up the good work.

still needs a lot more work, and I mean a lot. Try looking at more anatomy pictures, and try to match the model.

right now it looks too flabby and loose
