NV22 5-6: Trident

This one was a lot of fun to model, and probably even more fun to render. This time I used eevee, and the volumetric lighting worked out a lot better than I expected it would.

Instead of recreating the typical big chunky aquaman style trident that I see so often, I decided to go with a more elegant jewelry-esque look. Getting the twisting to look good was a lot more difficult than one might expect.

Breakdown: Crepuscular rays

I came up with a neat little trick to create the godrays in eevee:

The world shader is a simple volume scatter setup, and there are three sun lamps.

I created an icosphere and deleted random faces. I also displaced it for good measure.

I gave it a shader that’s only visible to shadow rays, so it affects the light, but isn’t visible to the camera.

This adds so much depth and texture to the lighting.

This shadow method is genius!! The trident is really cool, as well, but I can’t believe I’ve never thought of doing this with shadows, I’m stealing this for sure  Nice work!

Thanks! I’m also looking forward to using this technique in future projects.
