well to my original question it’s a “no” then, I would need to go through materials and would not be able to use random colors I guess.
Yes. Turn on Random Object colour in the Viewport Shading first.
Select an object, and adjust the following:
Object tab → Viewport Display–>Color/Alpha

quick question on the side, anyone know how to allow random colors for a bigger range, not just those pastel ones?
That I wouldn’t know about.
The main reason why the colours are somewhat muted is simply because they need to light up (more saturated and brighter) when one or more object is selected.
It’s a design decision based on functionality.
That said, it might be possible via Python. Depends if this is a hard-set limit or not.
