Object's duplicates with delayed action

I would like to achieve this:

  • I have a mesh object with a transformation action, and I want some duplicates (shifted in location and scaling) that do the same action, but with a certain delay to start.

I was wondering if there is a way to do this without actually duplicating the object, like with an array modifier, but this can’t offset the action for each copy.
