such as aplying a plane with mountains over a sphere to achive the efect of the sphere having the parts coming out of it?

with careful adjusting of softbody parameters and vertex groups, you might be able to fake it then apply softbody as a real mesh.
any idea on the setings i needa have to wrap it?
