I am working on an underwater scene with cycles, and am trying to figure out how to get the lighting right to show the surface of the water from beneath. What I am looking for is something similar to the first shot of this video
you can get the shafts of light effect by using a spot lamp set to ‘halo’

there’s a recent addition to the modifiers panel: " ocean ". should be just what you are looking for.
I already have that set up, the problem I am having is getting the lighting and refraction to look realistic.
I think it’s because there isn’t anything for it to reflect or refract above the water. what about putting a sky dome in, maybe with an emit value?
