OctaneRender™ Blender 4.0 plugin version 2023.1.2 - 28.14 [STABLE] released

We are excited to bring you the second alpha release of 2023.1, which comes with a number of new additions and fixes since the 2023.1 Alpha 1 release.

We are planning for this to be the last alpha build for this version. The next build will hopefully be a beta which will not be stable yet but contain all the features you should expect in the 2023.1 stable release.

As with all experimental builds, we advise to not use this release for production purposes. We are trying to, but we can’t guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases. Changes are still being made daily.

This version supports all current NVIDIA GPUs with compute model 3.5 or higher. Please make sure to use a NVIDIA Studio driver with version at least 456.38 on Windows or 455.23 on Linux.

We strongly recommend that for macOS, you use at least 13.3 or preferably newer.

New features

  • Added support for exporting TIFF and JPEG image formats.
  • Added new output AOV layer node “Blur” that allows adding a blur effect in post-processing.
  • Added new composite texture layer nodes “Adjust white balance”, “Comparison”, “Adjust color balance”, “Mask with layer group”, “Apply gradient map”.
  • Support for time transform animation in the batch rendering script and batch render job node graphs.
  • Added support for moving through the items of a menu pressing letter keys.
  • Added support for scatter nodes in Vectron node trees.

Changes

  • Allow entering a percent symbol when typing a value into a percentage float pin, rather than treating it as an error.
  • Changed the way a number of pins are displayed so they are shown as percentages or to always display the value’s sign.
  • Various UI improvements in the node inspector for output AOVs.
  • Disabling post-effects now also disables post volume effects.

LUA

  • Added octane.modules module to provide access to external Octane modules.
  • Added new image save formats: octane.imageSaveFormat.TIFF_8, octane.imageSaveFormat.TIFF_16, octane.imageSaveFormat.JPEG.
  • Added new image save properties: image.PROPS_TIFF_SAVE, image.PROPS_JPEG_SAVE.
  • octane.render.saveRenderPasses3 and octane.render.save now support TIFF_8, TIFF_16and JPEGimage formats.

Fixes

  • Fixed analytic light post volume tool-tips.
  • Fixed potential application crash while loading some scenes.
  • Fixed subsurface scattering in areas where something with fake shadows clips something with scattering and without fake shadows.
  • Fixed application crash while opening a new project while displaying a material/texture/geometry preview render.
  • Fixed an unnecessary render restart when you toggle the aspect ratio lock of the film resolution.
  • Fixed some percentage pins not displaying their values in percentages.
  • Fixed wrong spacing in pin names after rearranging layers.
  • Fixed issue causing to close the preferences window when the focus was not in the “OK” button instead of interacting with the right component.
  • Fixed issue causing brightness of caustics to vary depending on the number of samples being used.
  • Fixed application crash when changing parallel samples on PMC.
  • Fixed wrong Fresnel calculations for fake shadows.
  • Fixed various artifacts showing in some cases when using analytic disk lights.
  • Fixed directional light’s emission visibility not working.
  • Fixed light passes when using analytic lights.
  • Fixed material picker when used with analytic lights.
  • Fixed issue with AI light on OSX causing a wrong output.
  • Fixed wrong rendering of some materials after updating its opacity.
  • Fixed application crash when analytic light’s emission would require OSL shader evaluation.
  • Fixed wrong appearance of post-processing fog when used with a daylight environment.
  • Fixed issue not allowing to move new empty scatter nodes with the gizmo tool.
  • Fixed post volume artifacts on DoF.

We are excited to bring you the first beta version of the OctaneBlender addon!

This version works on the “vanilla” Blender you can download and install from the Blender Foundation website ( https://www.blender.org/ ).

This means there’s no need for a custom build anymore!

Running the Octane server is still needed.

We will continue developing/updating both the addon and non-addon versions, until the addon version can be declared stable.

Octane Blender Addon

Blender Octane Addon - 27.16.2

OctaneServer

Studio Edition

How to Install

  • Download the addon and the server files
  • Unzip the Octane Addon Server in any location on your hardrive
  • Launch the Octane Addon Server (OctaneServer.exe)
  • Launch Blender and from Preferences/Addon, install the Octane for Blender addon
  • Select File/New/Octane Default Startup
  • Quit Blender
  • Launch Blender again

Now you can use Octane on the most current official Blender version!

Scenes created with the current non-addon version may need to be converted to the addon version.

To do that, with the scene, you need to convert loaded in the non addon version, please use File/Export/OctaneBlender Addon.

This will generate a new scene with the “addon” string added to the file name.

As with all beta builds, we advise to not use this release for production purposes.
We are trying to, but we can’t guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases, so, again, do not use this beta for production work.

Features

Generally, We have migrated most of the features from the non-addon version to this addon version.

  • Support auto-translating to the Kernel Node Tree
  • Support compatibility mode
  • Support the classic render pass panel

There’s a pretty important issue preventing scenes to be rendered whenever an Empty is present in the scene. We’re wotkinh on the hot fix and we’ll replace the installers ASAP.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

This is a huge step in the right direction. Still a few little hickups in the addon version, but once they are done and with the next wave of bug fixes to the standalone version, this is a great (and probably the best) alternative to Cycles. I did a lot of tests in the last few weeks and I’m impressed. The quality surpasses Cycles by leaps and the features are great. And I can unfollow the AgX/ACES thread as well now. Color Management works so well in Octane and I can switch to whatever I want instantly. With the addon Octane will become much more accessible and attractive.

when is 2023 version coming to blender octane prime

Hi! I just downloaded the 27.16.2 beta addon, and the same version of the PRIME server.

Everything seems to be correctly installed, server is active, but when I try to render the viewport is a shadeless light grey. The video card is working and I can see the sample count going in the viewport, but there’s something wrong.

I added a kernel and selected it in the render settings, added a camera, added materials to the objects, but am I missing some more step? Any help? Thank you!

It’s a pity that Camera border is not working.
It’s an useful feature that help quite a lot testing seriously because I use it for materials and textures development as it’s quicker to reach a good sampling, as my pc isn’t so powerful (GTX 1070).
I hope it will be addressed soon.

Hi all,

After a few fixes, we’re glad to bring you Beta 2 of 2023.1. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback and/or reported any issues.

For macOS, we strongly recommend you use at least 13.3 or preferably newer.

As with all experimental builds, we advise to not use this release for production purposes. We are trying to, but we can’t guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases. Changes are still being made daily.

Changes since 2023.1 Beta 1

  • Fixed hang when loading a mesh to VDB node with small import scale.
  • Fixed sampling error for analytic sphere lights.
  • Fixed artifacts from small spread angle of an analytic light.
  • Fixed numerical instability when an analytic tube light is scaled very small.
  • Fixed pixelated aliasings on foreground objects’ silhouettes in post fog effects.
  • Fixed failed analytic lighting integration on back-faced surfaces.
  • Fixed an issue where nested layered and mix materials would not render correctly. On some systems, this would also result in a render freeze.
  • Fixed denoised main AOV, if emitters are used that are not on active render layers.
  • Fixed error during conversion of older volumetric spotlight using an unexpected texture in the distribution pin.
  • Animation time transformation now supports setting custom playback interval for the animations.
  • Lua: nodegraph.setLinearTimeTransform() function now has an additional optional argument for the custom interval of the animation.
  • Fixed bump on hair segments to allow the usage of the W coordinate texture in the bump channel.
  • Added support for postfx volume (light beams) effects when RTX is turned off.
  • Fixed much slower photon tracing convergence of caustics in certain scenes.
  • Fixed render failure on macOS when there are primitives with invalid sizes.
  • Fixed wrong dispersion from photon mapping.
  • Fixed an infinite loop when scanning for image tiles with a pattern containing no placeholders
  • Fixed crash when dragging a connector going to the type input of a geometric primitive node.
  • We now avoid filling in empty input pins after a scripted graph update for pins that are not new.

What’s currently the best Octane free tier to install, still the custom Blender build, or is the add-on trustworthy enough? If so, where can it be downloaded?

Thanks!

I don’t know how stable the add-on version is yet (no Linux version has been released). But you can download it here for Prime…

It’s still in Beta, so YMMV. Otherwise I would go with the custom Blender build.

Thanks, then I’ll stay with the custom build until the add-on is released as a free tier.

As far as I know, the Prime version is the free tier, but let me know if I got that wrong. Although you will have to run it under Windows right now.

There’s a free tier addon version (for 2022) available, but it’s still too buggy to use. I’d stick with the package version if you want to work with less issues.

Unfortunately for paying users once again. Not sure why OTOY excludes the free tier users from testing their beta versions. Isn’t that what beta versions are about? Gathering as much feedback as possible?
