well i get this weird effect when i turn on smooth shading, and of course if anyone could help me out i’d be thankful but heres a picture:

Well you can recalculate normals but my guess is there is just not enough geometry in your model to support the smoothing you are expecting. Try adding the Smooth modifier instead of just face smoothing.
Just a quick thanks to Atom. Recalculating the normals corrected the dark spots and odd shadows I was getting when I applied smooth shading to a model I was working on.
