Hopefully the real solution to that is a grass roots movement of creative people doing things for themselves. Nobody can dictate the content I create on my guitar, with my 15 year old Atari or with my Linux box.
I see the open source software movement as part of that: young, creative people making stuff they cannot afford for themselves and like minded individuals (hopefully breaking ground in the process by virtue of operating and thinking outside the box). If I ever meet Ton or Martin Poirier or anyone of the folks who consistently contribute to Blender, I’m buying them a pint. In the meantime, I’m doing my little bit to help out in any way I can. It’s like the 60’s counterculture all over again… but different.
This is not a stab at Microsoft or Apple, I use those OS to earn a living. But when I want to really feel like I’m doing something , freeing my mind (and soul?), I either go nostalgic or look for alternatives to “Corpo World”. Again, that’s only when I’m not pounding my wife in the carpet, which will always be better than video games or the latest Hollywood drivel.
well its an age old cycle in history that when somthing gets regulated or controled beyond the social accepted levels an underground culture then becomes the new power-base and an accepted industry.
i just watched a documentary on the history of comics, which got regulated and censored like mad… then the underground comics totally began to dominate. now we have huge comic culture that started in the underground.
Opensource IMO is the start of it. the software companies like microsoft are trying to stifle these open source competitors before they get a hold on popular market.
microsoft is already working with chip manufacturers to put in all sorts of media blocking and tracking systems.
the day your computer talks to the internet and knows you are watching illegal content without having the OS doing the talking is the day microsoft has been dreaming of.
but yeah from my knowledge we will begin to “own” stuff less and less. this doesn’t necisarily mean we have less freedoms.
Well it is not the only stupid decision he has madeabout longhorn. He has said
that if you want to run the new operating system properly you will need an 64bit 2core processor and 2gigabyte ram(they will work with 32bit processors
and less ram but don’t ask how). The system desribed above will be a system
of medium power :o !Also the new copyright system…
