OK I have a model, but now I need some "post-production" tips

Hi everyone, I’m aussie, fairly new to forum and this is my first thread. I have a few questions about some “post-production” activities after finishing and making a model.
I’m not asking that every question be answered but as many as people know the answer to.

  1. Legally how do I go about selling a 3D model?
  2. What licence should I put it under?
  3. How should I package it(zip it?) what quality should it be polygon wise or texture wise?
  4. What format should it be in? (.blend, .3ds, etc)
  5. Should I sell it from a website or from a company that just emails the files or… is there any other way?
  6. Is there anything else I should think about before selling content like this?
  7. How much should I charge for an 3D object if:
    a) I’m selling a licence to use it?
    b) I’m selling the right to it?

Any other advice or tips about selling 3D objects or any digital content (images, music, movies, programs etc…) I would just love to hear because I’m planing on starting my own business doing just this to get me through UNI to get a car/motorbike (motorbikes being my other obsession besides blender). This business would have 2 main pieces of software being used… Dev-C++ and Blender. Anything else would just be aiding these two programs.

Again any advice would be welcomed so please make comments.

whooh… well lets see… one way to sell youre models would be: turbosquid.com go there and youll get some answers to some of the other guestions to

Thankyou Felix, thats an interesting website, I’m tempted to signup to it… I especially like the option to have a cheque instead of paypal for recieving money from sales… I don’t trust online banking and simply won’t enter any bank account details online at all so that would work quiet well for me.
Anyone else with more comments or info would be nice! I’d like as many opinions as possible… any advice is welcome.

Regarding the legality, everything you create in blender is yours to with as you like. License, open source, copyright, whatever you want. The creations are yours.

If you’ve used someone elses stuff in your project you’ll then have to abide by their restrictions of course.

Thankyou Marty_D for the reply. I was pretty sure of that already actually but you saying that is now making me think about it… Like for example if I use the textures built-in to Blender or the Monkey Head in something… is that still MY creation or would it become like using another artists free object… would I have to give credit to the original artist?

Does anyone how any ideas about:
7. How much should I charge for an 3D object if:
a) I’m selling a licence to use it?
b) I’m selling the right to it?
If I’m selling a licence to use a object, should that licence be indefinite or for a particular time period? Or should I sell the rights to it? If I sell the right to it should I expect to get payed only a little bit more or ALOT more.

I’m thinking the way to go would be the make people have to signup to the website, if they see something they like they place a order in for it and mail/transfer/get $ to me somehow and I then add to their account that they have licence to that object… which they could signin and download from the site at any time from any computer any number of times they want/need to while that licence is still current. Although I’m not sure how it would work when their licence runs out because it’s not like I can/want-to put DRM on the files.

Would this be a fair pricing structure/layout for example:

Your purchased items:

  1. 3D Object: Description - Cost (eg Cool Car - $40)
    Filesize: 2MB
Available in these formats: .3ds .blend .x etc.
Ownership: Licence - 18 Month licence to object (Expires in 17months, 29days)
Click to Download: All in Zip Folder .3ds .blend .x

    What do people think?

You might also want to check out DAZ Studio. They run a shop selling 3D content. They’ve been around for a while and have prices on most any type of content you can imagine. I do believe, though, that once they sell an item, the copy belongs to the purchaser - no expiration date. You’d probably get more useful pricing info checking out your competition, everyone around here rolls their own.

So what does this model look like?

quoted in total agreement, you realy should check out how and what type of models at what prices do other people sell! as not that many here are actualy selling their models like this, as far as i know, so youd get alot more information that way.
