This is a scene I made after following Andrew Price’s flag tutorial.
I realize that there are 48 stars on the flag… This is actually a render I did for a short film I’m working on, and this flag is an old one that the main character and his group found in some rubble.
I also watched Andrews tutorial - I like the results I got as well.
I think this looks good. I have a 48 Star Flag that my grandfather carried through WWII, it is not quite as beat up but it is cool to see something like this… well its just plain neat.
You know how when you make something, people find meaning in it that you didnt initiallly intend? Well, my mom was looking at this render, and came to the conclusion that it makes a statement about where we are as a country.
The bleak cloudy sky, and the beat up tattered old flag, are there as of to say, “It’s been 50 years since there were 48 stars on our flag… And in 50 years what has ACTUALLY changed for the better?”
not what I had in mind while making this image, but it makes sense!
I’d explain the significance of this flag, and it’s role in the short film, but I’m typing on an ipod, and i dont want to reveal too much about the story just yet. But this flag is definatly a big thing in the film.
A little more variation in the dirtiness pattern, can’t really tell you what to do, but something about the current pattern strikes me as fake. Am I alone in this feeling anyone?
The flag movements in the animation seem to slow to me, for how stiff the whole flag is out sideways the end should be wiping around quite a bit faster. Alternatively if you made the whole thing droop and bend more nearer the pole it would look better as well. I haven’t watched that tutorial by Andrew, so I’m not sure what method he is using and which would be easier to do. Is it a cloth sim or a displacement modifier and moving texture?
Last comment is that there is not a rope for the flag to connect to for hoisting it. As is it looks like it’s directly glued to the pole, which is fine if you want it to be a very small flag.
The dirt and grime is part of the texture itself… I didn’t make the texture, I skimmed google images until I found a flag I liked.
At the moment, the flag isn’t that important, so I probably wont have an update for awhile. I’m the only person working on the film this flag is in, so I have quite alot to do. I still need to finish designing and building the characters, rigging them, build the the scenes and all th objects that go in them, etc.
So at the moment, I’m going to just take your advice and keep it in mind. I may not even keep this exact design.
Totally understand gnome, it’s just that you posted this in the “Focused Critique” Where I try to be much more critical even when I generally like something.
This is nothing compared to the work I’ve done on the short film. The scene I’m currently working on looks amazing. Some renders look real, and a few of them are so good you cant tell they are 3d.
Also, I find it funny that you think the grime and dirt makes it look fake… I took this texture straight from a real flag. It was a photo of a real flag lol
Well you already had my interest, now I shall be looking forward to seeing more of your work on this. As a warning, you have basically invited me to scrutinize it with all I’ve got, but you have also proven that you can perform at that level. :eyebrowlift2: Surprise me.
Regarding the flag, true that is a little amusing, but not that surprising honestly. Most of the time reality looks much worse then cinema, thus why it takes a professional team of people to make a decent movie. What I find more ironic is the fact that I get frustrated with how over media saturated my culture is and how that distorts the general populaces views of the world, and here, albit in a very mild form, I have displayed the exact same symptom that bothers me. It’s just a reminder that nobody’s perfect.
I have quitwe a task ahead of me… I have decided to make the film completly without dialouge. So I have to portray deep emotion, entirely through body language… Many if not all of the characters have their faces covered, so I can not rely on facial expressions either.
I have come up with a story that in 10 to 20 minutes, will make you think and possibly evoke alot of emotion. I believe this film is going to keep people awake at night wondering, and contemplating the meaning behind the story.
Thanks for you critiques… And it would be no fun if people weren’t tough on my work Sometimes I need people to point out what I’ve missed, in order to move forward.
You might wanna add some stitches or something on the part of the stick where the flag connects. It looks like the flag is glued to the stick. And decrease the pinning of the flag to make the part more realistic.
Darn it… Apparently, something has gone wrong with the .blend file and now I can’t open it. Every time I try to open it, blender freezes and never recovers.
Hopefully I can resolve the issue, but if not I’ll have to redo the entire scene.
I fixed it… Turns out it was just the computer at school being a jerk. I haven’t been able to make backup files, because I’m already taking up 12 gigs of space on the school network drive (all blender files I might add)
luckily, my home computer, which hasnt been working, started to work long enough for me to get rid of the virus that was messing it up. Now, I can save all my work to my home computer instead of junking up the school computer.
