Old-ish factory interior

Hello guys, I got a “little” inspired by this image: http://tinyurl.com/k5b7597 so now that I think I’m ready, I’d like to hear some feedback from you fellas so please comment & criticize freely. My point was not to make it exactly the same as the reference photo so all feedback is welcome regarding on the render itself

I really like it. Im a sucker for industrial scenes. Only problem in my opinion is the yellow stripes, too… uhm…they’re to prominent.

this deserves alot more attention, great job!

Is it meant to be black and white (I see yellow), so I don’t get if it is or not. If it is supposed to be colored, then you need a lot more work in putting color. For that I would look up old factory images to see what the materials are like. New vs old.

The back wall looks a little bowed down unless there’s a lens distortion then disregard that statement. That’s the only thing I noticed that needed work. I like the texturing on it as well. How long did it take you to model?

nice nice i am looking in to this, because i will have to model somethink similar

Kogh: Thanks! Do you think they’re just too saturated or do you think they should be black&white like the rest of the scene?

Sebastian: Thank you, really appreciate it.:o

Adam:Actually I didn’t use any black&white filters during post pro, the raw render was just so colourless before adding the stripes so I decided to include them. I’m not sure, but aren’t factories usually pretty colourless? I mean the walls in the images I found varied from grey to brown. Do you think maybe some graffiti and a little bit of moss and mold could bring some colorness into it? But yes, I’ll have to think about the colours for a while.

Anita: Yes, I used the panoramic lens instead of perspective(a cool feature I noticed) The modeling didn’t take too long(maybe 2-4hours alltogether?) because most of it is just mirror and array modifiers.

Kramon: thanks, I’d like to see your factory, house or whatever, when you have made it.

Now to ask you all, what do you think about the brightness, do you think it is too dark? Should I make it less constant to make it look it hasn’t been in use for a while(so that some of the rails and frames have fallen, make it little decayed perhaps?)

ty for your replies

nice job. you did this well!

saturated. I actually like it how they add some colour to the scene.

Actually, I like how this turned out…very “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”. I think you did well!!!

I love it.
Excellent composition.

Volumentric would gave this work so much… i think it is a must have.

@Ctdabomb, @Tc and @Michalis
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you liked it!

@Kramon That’s what I also thought  …but I don’t know how to do it in blender :frowning: so I added it in PS.

Also added some hanging moss and vines (do they even fit the scene and am I going to the right direction in making it look old-ish?) + some more compositing in Photoshop

PS are the yellow stripes still too prominent?

In my opinion? No, they give a nice effect
What I would have done? I would’ve made them darker anyway, it wouldn’t hurt the image, although they aren’t too bright to seem weird
Oh, almost forgot!
Excellent composition!

Moss looks great! like cubegod said, making the stripes darker would probably settle it for good.

keep it up

Yes and no. They’re too prominent with an otherwise gray on black image, even the moss is darkish in coloring. If you could smudge them a bit “grunge” that would take away the effect I’d think.

However the prominence of the yellow strips is also eye-catching as if saying hey look here and look there.

For some reason, the first image reminded me of the warehouse in the intro to the 2008 Knight Rider http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fO0mJO8vGE

Anyways, well done. I like both images, but I like the first one better. Doesn’t fit the old, degraded profile you were looking for, but that’s alright. If you come up with an image that doesn’t fit it’s original goal but still tells a story, let the image evolve, it’s not the worst thing in the world.

Thank you all for your responses!
There’s one problem; the artistic me just cannot (doesn’t know how to?)add more color into the scene. Also my very original goal was just to create a factory of somekind in blender(mission accomplished:D). So now that I’ve moved on doing other projects, I just made it black and white. I actually like how it looks without any special colours, also it was much easier than thinking about what colors to add, how and where (lazy/inexperienced me? :o)

So here it is: the what-I-think final result:

I actually like it better on my older monitor, it gives the pic a warmer look. I wonder what version you can see on your screens…? :spin:

I like the BW version too, although my color settings are quite neutral so it isn’t warm or cold

The BW isn’t bad. The thing is, as least in my mind, is that your image is far too “clean” for a rundown factory. Even with the ivy / plants and the grunge effect [which is a bit flat] on the far wall.

If my friend wasn’t on vacation I’d ask him for a photo of the old car plant he works at to give an idea.

But this is what I’m talking about.

I think if you move the ivy from the walkway and hang it from the beam overhead, so that it’s dropping down like ivy would. Add some debris [e.g. broken barrel] on the walkway it’d be better.

Color to me isn’t important [I take black & white photographs of wildlife I encounter on hikes in the backcountry cause it makes them stand out more]. It’s the scene itself.
