Started this today. What do you think? I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’ll have a lot of improvements to make.
This is not bad, but i can’t say so much about this, because, as you said, you recently started this, but currently it looks pretty good.
The mouth seems too flat. Try moving out the lips/chin to give the face a bit more depth.
Good work ont he cheeks and nose though.
Its coming along, and for your first run at this your doing a good job. Couple things I think you might want to take a look at though. One thing I’m seeing is the ears might be just a little higher than what they should be, but not much, have a look .
Also the eye a quite large… But then again if your not going for realism and you want it to be stylized then that changes everything that I just typed, although you would still consider somewhat as you consider what featires to push while holding back others. Either way keep up the good work.
hobbes: Thanks for your reply. I adjusted the mouth a bit, and it does look better:yes:
digitalillusion: You’re right, they are too high. I moved them down a bit. They still look too high, but I think I might enlarge them (since he’s an old man:p) And yes, I think I want it to be stylized.
EDIT: New render, by the way.
Just some minor tweaks and post-pro. This is for school so I have to have it finished.

The toplogy is iffy, but my biggest complain is the harshness of the edges. Like carved wood or something.
Maybe go for something softer…
How’s this?

tough points:
Lips(where they touch)
Sga beneath lips
Cheeks(maybe puff them out just a tad)
Other than that, would maybe benefit from some more uniform lighting, as this isnt yet an actual image, we need to be able to see the face well.
Ok, I wasn’t sure what Sga meant, but I tried to make a few changes.
I’m still thinking about lighting, but I added AO here.

EDIT: And since you mentioned topology…
Did you only use one lamp?
The scene seems to be outdoor, 'cause of the clouds.
But if its outdoor, its to dark, so work on the lighting.
Another point is, that the head is abit cube-ish, its to flat around the ears.
Anyway, as you sad, this is your first project, so its really good.
Keep it up, thou.
ahem, sorry about that, ‘Sga’ shoulda been ‘sag’
ColeZero: I’m using 3 lamps, but only one has substantial energy. I wanted it to look like a sunny day… but maybe I need to make the ambient occlusion have more energy…
free_ality: Ooooohhhhhhhh… Ok, I still don’t know what you mean.:o (Sag beneath the lips?)
Good work.
Your edges are very very rough though. All those rough edges really make your face look
flat. I just drew a bit to specify edges that need smoothing as far as I can see in the current
lighting setup (hope it’s okay with you). With the new sculpt mode, smoothing has become
much easier than it used to be. Just paint with the smooth brush, and bingo!

Keep at it! Hope it’s useful.

Wow, thanks for the paintover! It was very helpful, and it’s definitely ok with me:yes:. I did a little bit of edge-softening, but this is due tomorrow so I can’t put a lot of time into it.

sorry as it is due tomorrow…so this might not be very helpful, but i’ve noticed that mouths bulge out due to having a jaw, it looks flat to me.
