yeah, cool… :expressionless:
:frowning:

My 18th birthday was on the 19th november
After the age of 18, everything goes faster. And all you can do to preserve yourself, your mind, is to hang on to some memories of when you were a child.
I’m quite happy to be 18 to open myself to other experiences, to gain independance.
But i regret the early years of my life when my only occupation was to enjoy the time i shared with those i loved and not thinking of how i would survive for the 70 years to come (and not thinking that getting older is just dying more). I guess the show must go on and hope that the best is still to come.

"Time it was and what a time it was it was,
A time of innocence a time of confidences.
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you’

Don’t worry, Be happy!

Hrm… I think your number may be off. I think that perhaps in 70 years, someone 88 years old could be considered middle-aged, or even young.

Imp

I do not want to live soooo long… there’s enough problem with overpopulation in this poor earth without 200 year old people squatting the place.

Geez.

Well maybe just some VERY special people should be granted such a long life.

Dani

Ah. Very special people only. I can’t quite figure out what to say to that, except would you be willing to go to all the old people and tell them, “You know… we could make you youthful again, and let you live a good while longer, but hey, you’re just not special enough.”

Well… that’s the first part, the second is that I imagine there’d be plenty of people with your attitude… well perhaps. I’ve heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t want to live that long. I think mostly it’s because they think that they’d spend all that extra time geriatrically challenged, rather than the very real possibility that they could have the youthful physiology of of 20 year old. Who knows… there may only be a minory of people who go for it… I tend to think that if it were a reality, most would change their minds though.

I think such an eventuality could really be a transcendental catalyst for our evolution. Consider how much wisdom most people gain through their years… consider how wize a person of 200, 300, or 1000 years could be. Consider how far along we would be now if some of history’s wizest and most skilled individuals were still around. Would we already have a unified theory if Einstein were still here? How much more awesome and inspiring fiction would we have if Robert Anson Heinlein were still with us? Could AIDs perhaps been cured by Dr. Salk?

Consider also the change in lifestyle. If someone could live youthfully for a very long time, would they still start having children so early? Or would they perhaps wait a few decades? Who knows… perhaps some would even wait an entire career, until they have the savings to stay home and home school (I would, hehe). Well gee… then with those savings, and going back to work, they could support their children for all the education they wanted… no rush to get through school and start working… how many more would stay in school to get multiple degrees or doctorates. Of course, social security and pensions would become obsolete… smaller government, fewer taxes, higher wages… more money to spend, invest, give to charity…

Well… anyhow. I got a solution to population problems… colonize the Moon, terraform Mars, and keep looking. :stuck_out_tongue:

Most people are humble people who do not pretend to be able to, say, save humanity. But what I was talking about was a mystical thing, more likely 2nd degrees but once again you’re deep into rock, like how Arwen and Aragorn are granted a long life after their fight against Sauron.
But if a exceptionnal human came to earth and cared about this earth’s becoming for exaple, then why not.
I wouldn’t like to see Bush dictate for 200 years (hehe, I feel where going off topic) Sorry for this @ce. mea culpa.

Well… that’s the first part, the second is that I imagine there’d be plenty of people with your attitude… well perhaps. I’ve heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t want to live that long. Let me give you some eco-paleological basics.
There are 2 sorts of territory occupation strategy throughout nature:
-“A” strategy: basicly symbiosis between the environnement and the living creatures. Generates long lasting species with contrôled population.
-“B” strategy. Basicly parasitism. A species comes to this “ecoligic-nest” and develops furiously, pumping out all the available ressources until there no more. Generates very dense population but shortlasting (when there’s no more ressources they extinguish)

Until homo sapiens or even homo sapiens sapiens, we could have been considered as “A-strategy” species.
But with the arrival of homo sapiens industrialensis (to give it a name…) we are becoming a “B-strategy” species. (like the aliens in indipendance day if you want a wide spread reference)

And extending human life might get the situation even worse, artificially generating overpopulation. Basically, wanting to live longer is a greedy behaviour as it only concerns your own personnal pleasure (like those 60 year old women giving birth, you imagine the kid at 18 yo, having an 78yo mamma?!).
Extending human life would be useful, only if the species were coming to extinction. you could try to regenerate individuals by extending the breeding period (sorry for speaking of humans in such a way, it’s not far away from eugenism though I am NOT an eugenist).
As a responsible human being, and since I’m no special dude, I WOULD leave the place for the new generations and not add my needs to the needs of billions of humans.

I think such an eventuality could really be a transcendental catalyst for our evolution. Consider how much wisdom most people gain through their years… consider how wize a person of 200, 300, or 1000 years could be.

And an immense disaster too! Consider 6,300,000,000 humans living for 200 years. when all these will be post-puber then 6.300.000.000 humans will be able to breed giving birth to approximately 3,150,000,000 babies who would reach the age of breeding with most likely all of their parents still alive and being able to procreate. The population would grow exponentially. But you probably have a solution to feed all of these young, ful of strength, mouthes.
Death exists for something indeed.

Salk?

You’re talking about special people here ;), not everybody is Einstein, or Newton or whoever.

Okay you’re right. And who cares about poorer countries! yeah! there under-developed, it’s their fault if they don’t have acces to universities an multiple degree stuff…

Well… anyhow. I got a solution to population problems… colonize the Moon, terraform Mars, and keep looking

B strategy.
I’m not part of it.

Sorry again for the OT. Really sorry @ce. Hope you trully enjoyed your birthday with your family and friends. Have fun!

Life is short, play more!

Dani

HOLY SH*T! You’re 18?! I won’t be able to count that high until I’m in college! (Just kidding.)

I really want to be 17… then I can rent R-rated movies and hopefully my parents won’t bite my head off!

My sister can’t wait to be 16. She’s already begging my parents for a car! AND HER BIRTHDAY ISN’T UNTIL FRIGGIN’ DECEMBER!

My brother can’t wait to be 18. He’s already started talking endlessly about what he wants for his birthday… and it’s on April 9th… I keep telling him that I don’t make decisions about what he gets, and that he should wait until April, but he won’t listen.

My other brother (who’s in Ohio) can’t wait to be 21. He sent us a list of things he wants, like a van, a laptop, “The Patriot,” “Braveheart,” and such. Let me get this straight… he thinks he can get a laptop when I can’t? (Of course it might be because I’m annoying. But so is he.) And a VAN? When he’s supposed to be using a bike? :stuck_out_tongue: NO FRIGGING WAY!

I can wait until my next birthday. Unless my parents win and I have to do chores to get what I want. “Please… I haven’t eaten in 5 days…” “NOT UNTIL YOU CLEAN UP AFGHANISTAN!”

My parents basically think of themselves as seniors, so I guess they can wait.

Yes, sorry @ce. I generally forget the announced topic, and follow the conversation wherever it flow. :-?. Here’s what I’m gonna do… I’ll quote all of Dani’s last post, and reply in a new thread. Once I’ve posted it, I’ll edit this one and put a link below for those who want to continue this spun-off topic…

Again, happy B-Day @ce.
