1: You can insert keyframes in the texture-window by the same way as you do in the modelling window. The diference is that you have other options here, like Alpha and stuff.
2: Yes.
3: Hmm… I read a firework-tutorial somewhere were there was a little part that was about animating the texture. Don´t remember the URL, though.

You can also use AVI or AVIjpg files as textures.
Choose Image type texture and load an AVI.
