One ring to rule them all

Hi !

I made this image following a tutorial and tweaking things until I got a “decent/better” result.
I am just a hobbist so I hope you like it.

I think the volume effect is little bit too strong, but I like the ring and also I like the map.

Oh thank you for the constructive comment. Very appreciated !

First of all the map was a thing I really worked on because I wasn’t satisfied with the initial result that was quite similar to the tutorial one. The first map I found on the net was not enough detailed and, once rendered, the quality was very poor so I googled until I found a high res bw map (10800x9372), multipled with an old paper texture and bumped.

The ring is nice but I think I’ll work again on it because the engraving needs a glow effect like the original ring in the movie or other images on the net.

About volumetric light, well, this is the first time I use it so I don’t know exactly how to tweak it in the right way but I will study. What do you mean by “too strong” ? The cone is too white ? Unfortunately this particular feature doesn’t work when switching to GPU so it’s very slow because I have to stick to CPU rendering and arranging things in realtime takes a lot.

Hey, this is amazing, and going to be even better the more you develop it. I agree with ArMan in that the volume is a bit too strong. Here’s how you can fix that. Just reduce the density of the volume shader, that should do the trick. Did you set the volume to the world or a mesh object?

I set the scatter volume in the world tab. Now I lowered the density and did a few renderings with different values until the light looked less stronger/white and the ring less foggy. Hope it is better now, I am not an expert.

I should redo the engraving because I tried but I wasn’t able to make the elfic writing glow. Right now this texture doesn’t have an alpha channel (just b/w) so maybe it should be easier if I create another version with that channel and redo the uv map (and nodes).

Tha’ts definitely better, but I still think it’s slightly too strong. Otherwise, the ring looks really precious with that shine and bloom.

Turned light beam in to god rays. Better ?

Definitely better, the volume looks a whole lot more realistic now, only issue is the image got slightly darker, but that’s easily solvable. Great work!

Thank you, I really needed those critiques. Realizing by myself that the image can be improved is very difficult because my eyes are quite forgiving when it comes to judge my work.
