My first post to any gallery anywhere. I made so my kids would think I’m a cool dad. You can critique if you want but I know it still needs lots of work. I just dont know if I wanna spend much more time on it. All rights reserved to Spngebobs owner.
This is great!! the only criticism i could state, is that the inside of the circles look to rough, perhaps they have flat shading enabled?
well done
Christopher Kneller
looks awesome! never seen the actual character, so can’t critique there.
Have you got subsurf enabled? it looks a bit lowpoly. (but that’s just a nitpick)
Welcome to the forum! Great username choice and thread title!
My friend Sherm Cohen otherwise known as cartoon snap draws spongebob for nickelodeon. He even gives some tutorials on how to do it, that you can find on Youtube.
<harsh_critique>
I think that Spongebob was never meant to be 3d, in fact he is the epitome of the type of character that won’t translate well, but if you did do it, you need to at least make it better than the original.
The textures are terrible (come on that’s not a sponge, its rubber), the modeling is shoddy (especially the hands), and the proportions are way off. Where’s Spongebob’s signature eyelashes?
</harsh_critique>
But…you captured the likeness, and you really nailed some good parts, like the mouth and where the sponge meets the shirt.
I also think it is pretty cool that you did it for your kids, I modeled Yoshi for my first model for the very same reason. I’m sure you have learned a ton during the process. Now go make original characters! (Sorry, I’m not a fan of fan-art)
<friendly_advice>If you want to be a cool dad, take the kids to the park</friendly_advice>
Congrats on your first model, I’m sure you have really come along way to get here, and you have got quite a talent. Sorry for the wall of text, but you are exactly the type of guy that deserves and needs feedback imo.
you could make the circles a bit darker and the iris little lighter. Thining the teeth would also do (although i am not sure of the outcomes)
The part above the nose is a bit strange. The sleeves aren’t rectangular. They are more like cones. The eyeballs should be closer. {Its focused critique, you know}
Hey Pixelanbits, If you really new to blender artists, then perhaps 3dementia’s comments might seem really harsh. Comments around here can be brutal, but they are well meaning. 3dementia does know what he’s talking about. His comments have helped me in the past and there is much to learn about Blender. I’m still learning three years into working with it.
As I look at your model it reminds me of a plastic toy one could find in a Happy meal or something like that. Tweaking the material you have for the sponge part of it will do wonders -Probably should lower the specularity and hardness of the material.
Man I just typed a whole chapter replying to your comments but when I tried to post it said my post was rejected and I have no idea why. Then when I pressed the back button my text was gone. It didnt have any urls in it. wierd. I guess I’ll try again.
Thanks for all of your replies.
chrisspoi- The way I made the holes was quick and dirty. I subdivided to about a million polys then gouged holes with a sculpting brush. Not very proper but it did the job. Thats probably why they look wierd. I figured I could just retopo later.
Sam M- It’s actually very high poly. Sometimes subsurf just melts everything to mush. I wanted to preserve the contours of the form so I used a lot of edge weights when subsurfing. Thats probably why it looks low poly to you.
3dementia- I agree with everything you said. Spongebob is such a dynamic character with the way he moves and his facial expressions that it would be very difficult if not impossible to rig a 3d model in a way that does the character justice. He’s been in a few 3d games though but they were kinda sub par representations of him. There’s actually no textures on the model yet though. I toyed with putting a procedural bump map on him to make him more sponge-like but it just wasn’t working for me. If I decide to texture him I may try again with a sponge texture and put some cloth texture on his clothes. Also youre right the hands suck. I suck at hands. The shoes suck too. I just don’t know how far I want to go with this or what I wanted to achieve.
smaller-tree- I agree that the part between the eyes that leads to the nose is probably the worst part. I’ll probably smooth it out and reform it with some sculpting. As far as the sleeves I think I need to detach them and make them a separate mesh. They’re just not working extruded from the body like that. Plus if youve ever noticed Spongebobs arms they’re not really attached they go all over the place. The color of the circles I’ll probably have to wait till its unwrapped. If I just apply a material to the polys you’d be able to see how messy the topology really is. Your other suggestions should be fairly simple to implement though, I’ll give it a shot.
SoggyCornflake- I’m not too worried about anyone’s comments. 3dementia gave good constructive criticism that I agree with. At least he didnt just say something like “You are terrible at 3d just go flush your computer down the toilet right now and give up!” As far as the material of Spongebob, I know he looks kinda rubbery but I have the spec all the way off. I thought it might be because of the AO but I turned it off and it still has that look. Maybe its my lights or something. Lots of experimenting to do.
With my work schedule (oilfield) and family (wife and 4 kids) I don’t have much time for Blender. So part of me wants to just move on to another project. I am really bad at finishing things. I have several unfinished heads and partially rigged bodys that I’ve played with. I’m not new to 3d, but this is the closest I’ve come to actually completing a character so maybe I should stick with it. I need to figure out what I want to achieve with him though. Whether I want to try to animate him or just pose him with some props and a background for a nice still image. I have yet to decide.
Thanks again for all your replies.

i like the modelling, great work so far!
Shading and lighting is a hard part. took me a year to start make nice looking shader. Look some video tutorials on BlenderGuru, BlenderCookie or get a book about texturing.
