I want to release an open source art pack suitable for a medieval fantasy world. The collection is not yet complete and is planed to contain textures and blender files with models for houses, furniture, doors, lights, routes (bridges, path stuff), dungeon sections, fortifications, natural caves, city parts, temples, shops, graveyards, manors, farms, mines, militar equipment, basic equipment (torchs, lockpicks), scrolls and books, weapons, armors, ingridients, keys, plants and vegetation, cloths, ornaments, basic body and animal parts, geological objects and formations, skies, special efects, ground.
Could someone explain in a simple way is the best the license to use from LGPL, ZLIB or GPL and what should i do or put in my package to make it open source?
I don’t want to restrict anyone to use these comercialy. Not that they are commercial quality. They are average to good and can be use to make quick prototyping of game levels, amateur games or serve as the basis to make more complex meshes. What i don’t wan’t is someone else to abduct the rights to use this pack and restrict everyone else.
BeBraw is helping you. What you are releasing is art, therefore creative commons might be the better choice. If you were releasing software then GPL would apply, as I understand it. http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html
But what do i have to do exactly? Just add the creative-commons copyright text file to the zip bundle that contains the models i want share and then upload it to some site? How can i be sure someone won’t download it and change the copyright and then claim i was the one who has trying to copy him?
yes, that’s exactly what you do. I wouldn’t worry about people trying to claim your work as their own. You will have a date on the site to go with your posted work, and if somebody tries something like that they would have the burdon of proof. (meaning they would have to prove that “their” work was done before that date) That just doesn’t happen. People post creative commons work all the time and I’ve never heard of anybody trying to pull a stunt like that. It would be pointless, and they wouldn’t gain anything from it.
