Overview
Hi, I’m from the Intensity Engine project, an open source platform for multiplayer 3D games and virtual worlds. I am now starting to work on a specific game using that engine, and I’m looking for a 3D animator/artist to work with (I’m a programmer). I’d be especially happy if I find someone who uses Blender (and not a proprietary tool) because I like the open source approach, and Blender in particular.
The website has more details about the project, including screenshots and videos, downloads (source and binaries), development tutorials, and so forth. Note: Please forgive the aesthetics of the website - I made it, and as mentioned above, I’m a programmer, not an artist
Who I’m looking for
I’m looking for someone that can do 3D modeling and in particular animation. This would be primarily of characters, and some props/scenery. No formal experience is necessary.
Game Details
The general game genre is a multiplayer combat game, somewhat like Quake III Arena etc. but in third person, and involving the players leading NPC minions in battle. The title is to be determined, and details of the game are flexible - I’m hoping that the person I work with has some cool ideas. The goal is a free-to-play online multiplayer game, i.e., people play for free on our servers. The game is intended to be open source, but that doesn’t prevent doing stuff like in-game advertising to help with upkeep, and if the game becomes popular and makes a profit, then of course that profit would be shared among all team members (note that I don’t have the money to pay salaries at this point in time).
I’m focusing on making a game with high replay value, so we do not need a huge amount of 3D art. And since most of the programming is already behind us, we should be able to see nice results fairly quickly, and have a beta in a matter of months.
Technology
The engine uses MD5 models (and can also do MD3/MD2 and OBJ), including skeletal animation and attachments. Exporting from Blender works fine, I tested with the Yo Frankie! models - you can see them in the screenshots
On the programming side, the engine is written in C++, Python and Lua, and the game itself in Python. It uses a lot of open source libraries, the foremost of which is Cube 2 (Sauerbraten).
The game is multiplatform; currently it runs on both Windows and Linux, and OS X shouldn’t be hard to do but I currently lack a suitable machine to test on.
