Option "add shader" is missing

Hi there!

I just started to work with Blender and I´m still very unexperienced.
At the moment I have the following problem: I can´

t find the option for adding a shader. In the material menu, there is no submenu for doing this. Also when I work with nodes, I can´t add a shader. (see screenshots)
I work with Blender Version 2.78 on a Mac.
Does anyone have an idea about this?

You are using the wrong renderer. At the top of the blender interface change from the default ‘Blender Render’ engine to the ‘Cycles Render’ engine

Also when I work with nodes, I can´t add a shader. (see screenshots)
These are blender render material nodes, not cycles render material nodes. Use the appropriate renderer to see the appropriate nodes
