Orchid Ikebana

technical detail :

  • Only the back / ground textures were imported from existing files , the flower textures were paint with blender Uv/Image paint tool .
  • The rendering took 20 min, there is : 8 sample Ao/one area light with 5 ray sample/ a point light without raytracing, 1300x800 px
  • Picture was ‘photoshoped’ to obtain the smooth ‘hamilgton’ effect and the signature.

This is a simple yet wonderful image! Aren’t you also a contestant in the Journey Begins 2d challenge?

Hello Womball,
‘Yes’ I’m the same ‘Deevad’ as the contestant in ‘the Journey Begins 2D’. here is my thread(I’m happy cause I arrive to finish it after redo it 3 times ! ).
Thanks for comment about my picture, it’s first time I exhib my 3d work with blender and I’m a bit shy. Good luck for your 3D entry ( your Wip is really interresting for learning Blender, and I’m happy to see more and more entry in the Cgsociety challenge using blender ).

shy? about what? that looks great.

though I’m not too sure about the way the stem attaches to the blossom…
looks a bit odd… and the glass might be a bit too reflective?
(Well I’m not much of a material guy… + a total texture failure. ^^)

love the mood/feel.

Hello The_nr,
Shy : I don’t know why but I have maybe a complex about my 3D level skill , it’s surely cause I’m a 2D professional and I do 3D for hobbie.
Your crits are good about the technical part ( reflect / stem ) I will try next time I will practise those detail to ask myself more time for realism.
Thanks to enjoy the mood of this illustration, it was my first priority to make a work axed on ambiant.

First of all, your 2d work (especially your journey entry challenge is stunning) but that’s not the focus of the thread is it?

The flowers are very well done modeling and texture wise but I do have a few crits on it.
*The image lighting is a bit dull and gives this impression of autumn and a near death to the flower. Only enphasized by the flower on the ground. It really depends on what you want to achieve with the image.
The petal materials seem a bit dull and too uniform to me but that’s linked to the lighting
*The flower textures are beautiful. You seem to have uv mapped the flowers because of the smooth transition of pink of the stem to the white of the petals.
*The vase looks odd in my opinion. It looks like a weird empty plastic balloon. Is it supposed to be a glass or a shiny silver one? Right now, I have the feeling it is a mixture of both. The reflections depend heavily on the environment so try getting your hands on a good skymap that fits what you want to do (we see the end of the ground plane and the uniform world color which leads me to think its a dull borwn and you used Ambient Occlusion with sky color. Am I right?)
*Now about the background. It looks a bit odd. One rather mohogany style wood as a floor (table?) and then an old worn dock plank as a vertical wall (It’s always odd to see one of the textures I use in other people’s project. Seems we use the same texture bank websites). I’d keep the ground texture but change the vertical one in something else.

Other than these minor crits. I love the concept of the image. The modeling of the flowers are great as are their texture.

And of course
“Bienvenue”

This is quite a nice little image

The lighting on the flowers is quite nice. It has this soft, painterly feel to it. However, I would give the lower flowers a bit more light as well.

Good job on the modelling. Texturing is quite good.

You have really captured the look that orchids have (at least the ones I have seen), that sort of slightly grim/mouldy look. Well done.

Aligorith

It’s really nice. I like the detail on the flowers and the texture of the wall. Good stuff

I think the glass could do with a bit more specularity though…

Hello Slepnyrl,
Thanks for your ‘bienvenue’ and comments, they will certainly enhance my skill for my future 3d project. Your right on all of point exept for my ‘world’ texture cause I used a light prob 360° painted my self ( paintover from an existing 360 textures). It represent just a square room with a lamp on the roof, ( the white point is refracted by the vase ). But your right about it when you said it’s not seeing in the vase. Now I see what you mean by transparent metal about the vase, but my eyes maybe starts to become blinds with so many little rendering I done. For my texture site, here (mayang) I think the first request of google when I type “Free Texture”… hum…hum , your right about them, I saw them in too many project ! Now, I think I will start to build my own textures librairie, walls from Toulouse ( my city ) are so original mostly of the time. Thanks again to took time for a overall disection of my illustration and for your bienvenue, I feel I will stay here cause I like the forum’s talkings.

Hello Aligorith,
Thanks for your comments, about painterly feel, it’s my ‘3d aim’ cause I’m sometimes bored of 3D to sharp with too much details for nothing. But painterly rendering looks hard to learn. If you someone see a tutorial about it , give me the link !
Thanks again for your coments.

Naive Amoeba,
Thanks for your comment, now it’s sure that I start to can’t see my vase. Now I will think 3 times before try to make a glass material.
Thanks you to appreciate details, it was the second aim to this illustration; build some details to focus on the flowers, and not show them in macro plan ( very near, I don’t know exactly the word in english ).

For all :

Thanks for your welcoming on Blenderartist.org !

here is a screenshot from my work plan :

I think it’s beautiful (regardless of technical points posted above). Given you 5 stars.

really beautifull

Many thanks to both of you Cyclingrelf and Narven http://yelims.free.fr/Manga/Manga02.gif

Hi DeeVad!
This is great work, I’ve got almost nothing to crit. Maybe a little more light. I think this would make a great wallpaper if the proportians were different.

The glass could use some work and the floor looks a little flat but it’s a really nice image.

Looking at your competition thread it’s apparent that you have a good set of traditional skills to draw on. Your transition to 3d work should make for a very interesting study as it seems that most of the good 3d artists have a solid understanding of 2d artwork (colour and composition).
The only problem I’m seeing is getting your textures to behave the way I imagine you envisage them. Hopefully as you get more comfortable with 3d you will start to show the same high level of quality as your 2d work.

Congrats on a very nice first post.

wonderful flowers! i agree it’s a tiny bit dark, but lovely anyway.

Really nice work. I think that there could be more contrast.

Beautiful.

Great work imho.
The flowers just look 100% beautiful.

in my oppinion it is very nice, good work!!!

quantum Hi DeeVad!

Thanks Quantum, I will think for make it in a wallpaper ratio, could be a good exercices. Maybe I will change the vase design to best fit with this new proportion. I will update here, and PM you if I have time to realise it.

Thanks chimpoid,
I started to seek more original textures and may be to draw them. Maybe the future vase will talk more about it. Thanks too to pay me a visit on my Cg 2D Thread.

treatkor wonderful flowers! i agree it’s a tiny bit dark, but lovely anyway.

Thanks, I will correct it for sure.

BeBraw Really nice work. I think that there could be more contrast.

May be it comes from my screen to, I may be work with a too much contrasted screen and my work looks maybe flat. I have to see on screen of my computers friends. Thanks for comment.

patdog Beautiful.

Trichter Great work imho.

<<mR.d@hLa!>> in my oppinion it is very nice, good work!!!

Thanks ! and thank you all to give me more than for stars on this project ! I will make an update soon, with surprising new details. ( and may be DOF )
