orientation of new objects

Complete newbie.
Blender 2.48a
Windows XP
Python vers. 2.52 installed.

No matter which view I have in the 3D window new objects are created in top view orientation which makes nonsense of the tutorials. Any ideas? I have done searches but key words add and orientation throw up loads of posts unrelated to my problem.
