I loaded a picture in the background. It show up fine. However, when I switch to ortho mode (numpad 5) the pic disapears. I know this is something simple but I can’t seem to solve this problem.

You mean Perspective. Background pics only show in Orto and Camera.

so when I see the pic, I’m in Ortho, but when I don’t, I’m in perspective?

Yes. You can check by going to the ‘View’ menu in the 3D window headerbar.
