that action contraints tut really helped, but is there a way to create more than one controller for a hand? such as a bone for finger curls, and another bone for spreading fingers?
Sure, look at the Ludwig rig (you can find it in the thread “Best of” in my signature).
In that rig Sketchy actually is using the same controller bone for curl and stretch, curl is mapped to the X rot, while stretch is mapped to Zrot.
You just add another action constraint as he’s done.

That’s right. You could use one bone to drive a whole range of different actions based on how you manipulate that bone. Rotate it one way to do one thing, another way to do a different action, move (grab) it upwards for something else and sideways for yet another result.
Obviously there are common sense limits but two different constraints driving the same bones would be fine in most cases.
