Outer space

Hi, guys. I continue creating 3d environment for the short movie, and although I tried to follow the principles of composition and lighting, it still looks raw. Would appreciate any tips:folded_hands:(Also ignore guy itself, he is needed to scale the real actor)

Are you going for something fully realistic, or more cartoony? Right now, what you have is a good cartoon space, but there are a few things preventing it from being realistic if that’s what you seek.

  • The stars would be smaller and more numerous. Their brightness would vary, but their visual size wouldn’t vary much. Stars are far enough away that you always see them as small as they could possibly look.
  • The night side of planets would be perfectly dark (or almost perfectly, maybe the space clouds in your scene would light the planets a bit, but I wouldn’t expect more than that). Is the white ground mesh lighting the planets?
  • Are the planets lit from different directions? I wouldn’t expect that, unless the sun is between them.
  • The planets might look better with an actual atmosphere. This could be done by adding a volume sphere, then giving it a spherical gradient that’s adjusted to add just a thin layer around the planet.

Here is a quick demonstration. It’s a bit bare and would look better with textures on the planet, but it shows my points.

This version is already much better !

I think in terms of composition it’s telling too many things at the same time, therefore our eyes wanders around without understanding what this is about, why there is a guy staring at us, what he is doing here ? What this image is trying to tell us ?

I removed some elements and made the distance more clear even if it’s cheated obviously…
Now this image is about some connection between two distant planet and that’s already enough.

We can start to introduce more elements but then this would need to be even more careful when crafting the image.

Once you have the right composition, then you can look into rendering and fill the missing gaps, but in the current stage, even with the perfect render it’s going to feel weird because storytelling is confusing …
