Outline of an object using Outline viewport info?

Hello,

I read a lot of topics regarding how yo have outline for and object : shading, solidify, compositor, grease pencil but none of them give me satisfying results (but maybe I missed the right one).

As when we select an object in viewport, we have a perfect outline of the object, perhaps it could be possible to extract this data and render this outline ?

I’m not sure if you can use what blender uses to outline but I’m sure you could replicate it. But what other methods have you tried so far and is your geometry animated?

I tried everything I found :

Shading (fresnel etc.), solidify (https://github.com/FelineEntity/Outline-Helper/releases), compositor (but transparent background required), grease pencil but outline is not really smooth everywhere.

Yes, geometry will be animated.

Sorry I didn’t get notified on your reply. The fact that the mesh is animated does make it a bit trickier. I’ve seen people duplicate their mesh, scale it up or fatten it in blender with Alt S, invert the normals and use an unlit material to create this effect but I’ve never tried this myself. You would also have to make it so that it always renders behind your main mesh but I think its worth a try. I don’t know how blender renders its outlines in the viewport so I can’t really help there. Best of luck.

With this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGV3v0wom1E, it works in Cycles.
