the volume cloud renderlayer took about 172 hours (~7 days) to render on an athlon xp 2100+. i never rendered a single image that long before. i hope you like it.
about the clouds…
750 z-transparent and textured planes are simulating the volume. since mist isn’t working well with this method, i had to use also an array of planes with a minimal alpha in camera direction to simulate mist more realistic.
the long rendertime comes from the high resolution of the image, because i had to increase the plane count which causes the rendertime growing exponentially.
of course, i could have done it completely without a computer too, just with paint and paper. besides that, i can dive the camera through my clouds, try this with painted ones! since i use blender mainly for animations and less for stills, i prefer 3d clouds.
… and maybe i should mention, that i have more than one computer.
Wow! those clouds are awsome! If only you had of worked abit more on making the planet abit more realistic. Great job just the same - the clouds are the best I’ve seen.
