Overdriving brightness

Hey,

im pretty new to blender and I keep running into problems that are so basic that its even hard to find helpful text or videomaterial about it.

a friend of mine whos more familiar with blender showed me a way to oversteer brigthness in a setting with moody lightning, so a single object with that material would stand out more and overall appear brighter - without being emissive itself (which would ruin the shadows on said object).
That was a few days ago and of course i forgot what shader he used. I cant ask him in person now, so Id like to ask for help here, instead. Im using the cycles-renderer by the way.

Oh … and if anyone happens to know a few tricks about how to make a material resemble brushed metal - please let me know. I dont know how to use textures yet.
