Overlapping Faces On My Rig

The faces that make up the mouth that i have moved with a shape key are overlapping and i get that dreaded effect.

Im very new to blender but I used to use lightwave in my High School Animation class, and of course that was WAY too expensive for me, so now I’m stuck with blender. Hence, this is probably going to be an easy or obvious fix that i either didn’t think or know about, so sorry about that.

Since this is for a Minecraft animation, the mouth is just two faces extruded to open/close the mouth vertically, and two to close it horizontally, but they intersect and i get that effect. Ive tried moving the faces that close horizontally back a tiny bit so the faces don’t occupy the same space, but i had no success. And I don’t want to move it back too far, because then it will look like there are two separate parts of the mouth instead of one smooth mouth. I don’t seem to get the effect when the rig is standing upright, though. Is there anything I can do to make it look better? Or possibly an alternate way to rig the mouth?

Also, while im asking, is there anything i could do to shorten the render time while still keeping the shadows non-grainy? It took me like 20 mins to render this shot.:spin:

The help is much appreciated, This has been bugging me for a while!

First off… if your ‘stuck’ with Blender then you probably don’t need to be using it… I use to use Lightwave… it’s a great program if all your wanting to do is animate SpaceAmoShips… but it sucks at Character animation… Blender is Volumes better… Way… better… NewTek basically doesn’t want to improve Lightwaves Animation tools because they want to force you to spend another couple thousand on purchasing an Character animation add on… (Enough about LW) Just know that Blender is a Power house Software for most animation projects…

It looks to me that those Rendering errors may not have anthing to do with overlapping mouth objects… (and I could be wrong on this) (I would have to look at your blend file to be sure… )

But lets do a bit of Trouble shooting…
Select your Object >> Tab into Edit mode >> Hit ‘A’ to select all >> then on the Left hand tool bar Scroll down and select the “Remove Doubles” button…
That should clear out any Doubled Geometery you may have which will cause this exact behavior if you have some…

Ah, i was looking for something like that! I ended up just remodeling the face, then I did X>Edge Loop on the four faces of the mouth that i wanted to move and extruded all four faces at the same time. But thanks, that would have been so much easier, note taken.

And yeah, I totally agree, I almost ripped my hair out trying to rig a character in LW. In my opinion so far though, its easier to model in LW but Blender definitely is superior when it comes to rigging. I just meant that i was stuck learning a new animation software, and blender for me was quite confusing when I first opened it up. Im used to learning by messing around with the program and in blender it was a little hard to do. Every day, though, Im finding it is easier and more superior to LW.

Yah… for me… I went from LW to max to maya… to XSI… I then fell in love with the way XSI does things… and Blender is almost an exact copy of the XSI layout … so for me the transition was very very easy… practice modeling with Blender once you get use to it… you find Lightwave so easy to use any more… but even at that … we all have our favorite software… so use it and be glad…
