Hello all, long time no see. Found some news I thought worth sharing. Microsoft has announced a “creators update” for Windows 10, which will introduce Paint 3D.
Link:
Apparently it can remove backgrounds from objects. turn 2d sketches to 3D ones, let’s you create simple 3D models in a way that is meant to be “easy” and looks quite cute. I really like the emphasis on importing 3D scans and simple sharing of the models you create (also 3D printing support), no word on animation. They are partnering with Sketchup to create 3D “clipart” for it, which is a neat idea. I havent touched Paint in years (not since I last used windows XP) and I find it quite funny that after all these years many kids first 3D Modelling experience could be with Paint of all programs hehe.
All in all, I am quite curious to see how this turns out, I personally think its great that there be a new “simple” 3D program that kids could potentially use.
Here is a hands-on video from the Windows Central team (a lot of detail about the basics)
Right now there’s little of interest for us Blender users, but I could see them taking a big chunk of the kids and beginners market away from the Autodesk 123D applications (if not only due to the fact it will be bundled with Windows).
At the least, we now have a literal benchmark for “the MS Paint of 3D software”
I think its only a little bit funny but more a waste of development hours, if they are serious of 3D maybe they should join Blender.
The later is not a strange thought since Microsoft does do a lot of opensource development these days (you’d be supriced how much).
@Razorblade: Even for some 3D CAD modelers Blender’s UI is challenging. If blender was installed on windows by default, only small percent would use it.
microsoft has reached out and asked how they could help in the past. ton told them free windows licenses, not sure if they got them. i dont think windows can include blender as a default program due to the viral gpl, no way are they going to make windows open source and free to distribute how ever you wish, it would also give license to virus writers and hackers. you cant assume everyone useing widows has good intentions.
i’m not sue if noah snavley still works for ms, but if scans and tracking are involved he should be the person ton asks to borrow if so. dude is a code magician.
@RDo3
Well microsoft is giving away free licenses… windows 10 lot, is free.
Uprading 7 or 8 to windows 10 was free, and i think they had to do it since linux upgrading is free as well.
Free software wouldnt cause more hacks, linux is free and it doesnt happen in that field either.
But essentially they are a software writting company and so thy cannt give everything for free.
The thing i can imagine though is that they and probaply google and apple as well, have so much $$$ in cash and also so many brain power as in the form of skilled coders, that it wouldnt hurt if they let go some of those software engineers give coding vacations in other fields. Otherwise you get bored coders who create 3d stuff in paint, or a flight simulator inside Excel, and other stuff like that.
If i where such a company i’d encourage such coding exchanges, cause it would keep programmers sharp and widen industrial knowledge, which eventually returns back to the company.
So it be more like a summer of code in reverse, sending out company coders to other opensource areas.
And as for Google SamSung Apple Microsoft, the next steps to tackle is robotics ai better human interaction, thus to get 3d experience it would be good. Its maybe Ton who should offer an internship to MS/Google/etc employees, they can keep their original paywal but get brainmuscle stretching at Blender institute a code bootcamp sabbatical .
Most of the more negative reviews right now is related to the app. being broken on certain systems and not due to the feature-set.
What also doesn’t help is that the Windows10 app. store in general is reported to have been notoriously error-prone for at least a year now (in contrast to the fairly reliable storefronts for Android and iOS).
Weird direction to go in to be honest, why not just slowly make it more capable as a painting app. Hell, would be awesome if it eventually became something capable of rivaling GIMP/Krita/Photoshop one day. But yeah, that is probably just wishful thinking, even though it kind of make sense with their new Microsoft Surface stuff they just unveiled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECPGAAUt_Hw
