Now we have great Sculpt Mode, but ZBrush also have great painting features… ;).
I know that Blender 2.43 will have better paint directly in 3D View. I also know that we have Verse which can connected Blender with Gimp via plugin for Gimp, but… both this methods are limited… Painting module in Blender don’t have many features. Painting via Verse also don’t be perfect: slow refresh rate and this is only paint in 2D…
My solution: plugin (based on OpenGL 2.0) for Gimp which can open and display 3D model (for example OBJ) with correct UV (which can be created in Blender). This plugin would give possibility to paint in 3D directly in Gimp (diffuse, specular, etc.). I prefer Gimp paint because it have many features for editing and painting textures and aslo have many filters, plugins !!!
But I can do this plugin… I’m only user… Maybe will somebody do this ? For example with support - Google Summer of Code…
Have you tried the new texture paint with an image texture set to air-brush? Thats quite cool, you can kind of ‘stamp’ your texture where you want on the object, plus re-sixe it with the size slider. I make several images rotated a bit, of my texture. That way you can get the image to rotate a bit to add variety, once youve mastered it its quite quick and fun!
Koba <- You not good have read my first post ;). I have tried Verse + Gimp + Blender… This is 2D paint with slow refresh… You should try ZBrush or Modo for 3D Paint when you will know what I have in mind…

Oops! :o
The nearest thing I tried may be Deep Paint 3D (and that was a long time ago) but I don’t think you’ll have the same tools in Blender for a while. I’m afraid I can’t help you then!
