Parent-child relationship among extruded vertices?

Hello. This has probably come up before, but I couldn’t find anything when searching.

Lately I’ve been observing a behaviour which I hadn’t seen before, by which a vertex that has been extruded also moves its “parent” vertex when it is moved. This makes what I am attempting very difficult. Is there a way to destroy this relationship? Thanks.

This is either because you enabled proportional edit mode or you have enabled the “applyin edit mode” toggle in the subsurf modifier 1 2 (see here and search for “Applies modifier to editing cage in” for the usage of this toggle)

Everything else would be bug i think.
