Parenting an object to a bone for picking things up

So the animation begins wit the character walking up to a box. Now, I tried parenting the object to the box, but how do I get it to stay where it is, and when the character bends down to pick it up, have it follow his hands?

I tried something with influence, but I don’t know how to get it to work. Basically: how can my character pick up an object?
