parenting objects

I have a cartoon balloon with text, is there a way that I can combine both text an circle (balloon) as one object so I can make them transparent both at the same time. I tried parenting the text to the balloon, but when it comes to transparent it, I have to select both the text and balloon and transparent them separately. I the text is black and the balloon is white.

Why not just join them together? You can still give the balloon and text different materials even when they are joined.

you mean by parenting them?

If the two objects have different materials to begin with, you can join them (CTRL+J) and make one object that has two materials applied. You’d still have to go into each material though to do the transparency, but from a project organization standpoint, it’s nice to do.

You can also use the compositor to accomplish what you’re trying to do. Simply put the objects you want to fade out on their own render layer and setup Blender to render the “Balloon” layer and “Background” layer. Then keyframe the Alpha Over node to do your fade at once. When you finally do render the shot, the “Balloon” layer (and thus anything on that layer) will fade out in the final render.

You can create a node group which takes one shader input, and has one shader output. Inside you have a mix shader with transparent, whihc you keyframe. You put that node group at the very end (just before material output) of your noodles for both materials and you can keyframe in one place only.
