Particle Material IPO Curve BUG IN BLENDER?

I modeled a thruster that has a flame coming out the back.

I used the ipo curve to have the flame change color, but I don’t understand something.

If you select the thruster, go to the material IPO curve view, draw the frame cursor, you will see that the color changes in the materials screen. And the IPO curves show that this color should change over about 65 frames.

However, when you render it, the color actually changes OVER PARTICLE LIFETIME, not animation time, which is still pretty cool because you can make the edges of the flame different color, but how do I change the particle color over animation time? Is this a bug in blender?
