Particle schmarticle... V245.15

Hello there,
I have been studying up on the particle system. in Ver245.15 there aren’t that much updated documentation for the system but I was wondering if anyone knows how to do the following…

Im working though the BSOD Introduction to Physical simulation. there is a section that one makes sparks like those from an angle grinder…

in the documentation there is a referance to VECT…this streches the particles by their speed.I have been playing around now for almost a day and I can’t seem to find someting that does the same in the new Particle system…

Change the visualization to line.

What do they say about assumption… I thought…well assumed that the visualisation was only for the viewport…
