particles fluid for sand

Hi, everyone

I’m trying to realise a hourglass by 2.65a, with fluid particles system to animate sand, but every settings of particle system generated only a sort of marmalade, not a typical sand heap.

Do you know the right settings for particle system fluid?

Thank you Richard, but your link are referred to 2.5x version, with different settings. Sand effect was possible in these old version (I saw some clip on youtube), but it seem impossible on 2.6x version today.
The friction of the particles themselves is missing. Or I didn’t succeed in finding it.

Water that looks like sand ? A texture or are you going to use a bazillion little cubes.
