Pearl Necklace

So yeah! I’m in modelling for half a year…I’ve been testing all over the place and this also started off as a test and ended as a 45 minute render…:stuck_out_tongue:

Basically the concept is a Pearl Necklace…quite simple…suits me! I like stuff simple.

Basically my qustion would be: How could I improve it…

the pearls don’t look quite right, haven’t got a clue how to make them better tho.

I thaught of adding oily effect, but I don’t think that would look good…then aggain I might try…:eyebrowlift2:

Are the pearls reflecting something or are those streaks in the texture?

If it’s in the texture that might be your problem. The odds of finding natural pearls with streaks like those have that match exactly are astronomical.

YES! They are reflecting! But the streaks are actually in the texture too…if you look at the pearl in the middle…that is the effect I tried to reach with it…but somehow the rest of the pearls acted quite odd and performed steaks  Any idea why this may have been caused? I have the feeling that it’s because those are made one model and thus cause the texture to spread all over. How could I seperate a whole model into pieces with selecting vertices? Any idea? :spin:

maybe you need sss like in a ring i did here with a blend
check material settings

the closure doesn’t look quite right. I don’t see how it works, it looks like the other beads. On the pearls i think the texture is part of what’s making them look like slightly textured steel instead of pearls.

Yeah! I’ve had the idea of SSS too…but that would really make the render time hours. Which ofcourse doesen’t matter if I’m doing the final render, but I would like to get rid of those stripes first. And to do that I’m going to have to do some test rendering…

By the way with the SubSurfaceScattering I was thinking of using somekinda milky style…Any specific ideas?

So anyone know how to seperate a vertices and make those a different face…I mean If I select that particular face, then it doesen’t select the rest…?

EDIT
OK! I’ve solved the seperating problem. Use the P key when the wanted vertices are selected.

Ok guys! Here’s a little update on my necklace. Now that I’ve managed to seperate the model into pearls I’ve reached the effect I wanted. No more swirls and streaks!

The update render doesen’t contain the floor or the surface that the necklace is on. Really helped render time.

Next task:
SubSurfaceScattering
S S S = SSS

Ow! And there’s a little comparation with the old one.

*darn! Just noticed you can't zoom in on- the comparing...Well...then just trysaving it and viewing it like that...if ur interested that is...:)*

UPDATE 2
OK. Yes! An update in the update!
So this is what happened. I was thinking (yes that is quite a bit of a wonder how I managed to “Think”) “What if I overdid the textures? What if a little cracky effect and noise is enough and then use SSS?”
This is what I got when I took out the textures (3rd attach)
Viewing advise: Open the first pic then the third. And switch the windows… You will then see that the first one is WAY yellower in color thus causing it to rather look dirty, ancient in a way. Basically what happened was that I overused the dirty look. :o
WHICH DO YOU THINK LOOKS BETTER?
I find the whiter more satisfying but that’s just me.

Probably now I’m ready for SSS…Any ideas for that?

Ok guys! Here’s another update on what I did with SSS…
What do ye think?

much better!

Thanks for the help!

EVERYONES HELP!

can i get a copy of your sss settings?

OFCOURSE YOU CAN!
Although it’s rather odd because I was just trying to move the sliders to values I found rather…normal… I actually set SSS and I was pretty much satisfyed with the first render. Although I don’t really use it a lot. Kills render time. And I don’t like long render time :stuck_out_tongue:

Now let me take a quick screenie.

Don’t forget that I’ve got reflection and a little bit of transparency there. And texture…
here ye go:
