Once I switch to ortho I cannot get to switch back to perspetive. Even when it says it’s perspective it renders ortho.
Are you on Windows? If so, reset your preferences to Factory Settings. If that doesn’t work, uninstall Blender and reinstall.
If you’re on Linux, I can’t help.

Pressing num pad 5 does not switch to perspective?
Also see if you have accidentally keyframed the persp -ortho switch. This is probably why it renders ortho.
Maybe you are looking for a setting in the camera properties
