[Photorealism Critiques] [Interior Design] I Remodeled My Bathroom

Would like to improve my interior design photorealism so I’m renovating my bathroom in Blender. Not sure if it’s modeling, texturing, lighting, or a combo of all, but some parts of this look pretty cg to me which is obviously undesired so any tips and critiques would be appreciated! This is after a little post-processing. I have some dust and smudge maps on materials but it was hard to tweak to get it just right without looking gross or weird so this one didn’t seem to show much of that. Also what can I change about the lighting, something just seems off to me?

Nice render btw. I’m not a pro at all, beginner myself, but there is one thing that I think would improve your render. Scale. Sizes of toilet, bathroom, the cabin between toilet and bathroom(can’t remember the name) and some of the details are off. I personally think, that making the sizes of those things proportional to each other (I mean in scaling way) would make render more realistic.

I may be wrong, but toilet seems too big compared to other objects. Search for free 3D Human model for blender and you can use him for scaling in scene. So you can compare models to the character. Or you can search websites for measurements of the objects you use.

About the lighting. I think there’s nothing wrong with it. If you want to “improve” the lighting, you can try to use IES lights(search youtube for tutorials about that stuff, it can be usefull in such scenes where you don’t use sunlight or enviroment lighting), or try blackbody for colour of the light. But personally for me there isn’t something WRONG about the lighting.

Looking at reference drawing of toilets with dimensions it looks like some of the proportions are off. I’ll try to tailor it to those numbers as well as the other applications as well. For this render I tried to eyeball it in the sense of “Oh this dimension is probably like 50cm so that looks good” which was probably too relaxed.

I forgot about IES lighting, but I suppose that’s what blenderartists.org is for! I guess with the lighting I was looking at this scene and thinking “man there’s something not quite right but I’m not sure what it is” so I defaulted to lighting. Maybe I’ll add a little noise to the IES map, but other than that I’ll keep it as is.

I’ll try to update this thread once I have another render and hopefully the render will be improved. I’m also going to add some more details in terms of bathroom decor and stuff though that’s just to make the render more aesthetically pleasing not necessarily for realism.

I think it would help to apply some “tilt-shift”:


All objects in your picture have the same focus, it looks too artificially.

Further the corners of the marble plate are too sharp for my taste, maybe a little more beveling could help.

But good render, anyways.

To be honest, I had to google “tilt-shift” as this is new to me :laughing:. I see what you mean though. Right now all I have is a camera focus to the left of the door to the shower kind of floating there. I have been operating on the assumption that that is where defocusing of different objects comes from, but I suppose that’s only for certain lenses. Do you usually apply this blur in post or can you do this well in the blender compositor?

I will see what the bevel looks like pumped up as well.

you can do it with every graphics tool like PS, or you can do it directly in compositing:

Shower door glass could need some reflections.
Real world scales would help a lot.

Appreciate all the comments! I think I implemented everything. I (1):added a little tilt-shift to defocus the upper back wall, (2): added a few more decor elements so there isn’t so much empty space, (3): I looked up real dimensions for things and measured the room I’m recreating to size the objects appropriately, (4): added reflections in the glass, and (5): changed the aspect ratio and focal length of the camera to try to recreate an iphone camera.

To me at least this looks much improved, though I recognize I’m far from perfection. If there are additional comments so I can improve even more I’d be happy to hear them! I’m also working on other shots of the bathroom for different perspectives.
