Please crit, don’t be kind.
I’ll share the final blend if anyone finds it useful.

eh - could you give a eye texture with your blend file? All I see in Blender is gray ball

Sorry, eye texture should now be packed.

its way to dull it needs to look shiny and wet

So - material is very good but it should be more shiny (glosy). Shape of the eye is also not correct - yes aye is not simple ball - the iris is convex part of eyeball.

You can check it in ‘Gray anatomy’ (you can find it in the internet). I’m using it to my work on skeleton and it is very helpfull. aha - you can also search for eye tutorial somewhere in the web, I have found it one but I can’t tell you where.

Waiting for an update

very good.
try making the eye more reflective and really make the coloured part stand out with a more detailed and sharp texture

In real life if you look that close into a mirror there is a noticable depth between the iris and the cornea.

But this maybe doesn’t help if you are just working with textures…

Turn ray mirror on and add some specularity

i believe its to do with the layers on the texture the thing thats making it look unrelistic is that the iris etc. is on the same level as the ball itself which is making it look dead u shoul also add mirror and spec to make it look wet but it needs to stnad out the iris and that more otherwiuse whatever you do i believe it will still look dead

UPDATE #2 (see first post for image)

WET/GLOSSY

its way to dull it needs to look shiny and wet …
shiny (glosy)
Turn ray mirror on and add some specularity
add mirror and spec…

Changed Spec:1.5 Hard:341 Transparent Layer Spec 2.0 Har:511
Turn ray mirror on, slowed render down greatly and transparant layer didn’t look right (see below)

STRUCTURE:

TEXTURE:

make the coloured part stand out with a more detailed and sharp texture

stouckol shared his eye texture and so far I think he is getting better results with it, so I went back to his initial, I think it is an improvement.

Keep the crits and suggestions coming I will be working for a bit longer tonight and really do appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

That eye’s looking pretty good.
Great work on the textures.

One suggestion,I think you should make it whiter, realistic eyes aren’t that grey.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

I will try whiter tomorrow calling it a night. Quick test render within a face:

PS: main texture was not my creation I am just modifing it, stouckol was nice enough to share with me and all of you in another thread.

Your problem with raytracing is that there is no light shining on the iris. The lamp you have above the iris is set to spot, change it back to lamp. Set A=1 IOR 1.33 Ray tracing on and adjust fresnel and factor.

I think you need to make the iris a separate material from the rest of the eye because you do not really want to have reflection set for the iris.

One of the problems with the iris is that it is a photo of a real eye and therefore contains unnecessary reflections and bright spots, normally these would come from rendering the eye.

I think the bulge is now too pronounced.

Still it looks fine with ztransp.

Yes - it’s much much better - but something is wrong with the veins. Also I think that this black point in the front of the eye ( I don’t remember how to say it in english  ) should have more regular shape. That’s all for now

(UPDATE ABOVE)
sornen: Thanks that was the problem, also reduced the bulge a bit.
WermooZ: Viens - I’m not sure I agree can you post samples
Shegzy: I think the gray is coming from the environment, lighten the enviroment and the eye will be white see TestRender.jpg above.

Better - vieins on my render looks concave this is a bit wierd
And I don’t like this reddy area near the iris (on the left side ) - but this is my subjective opinion.

Are you sure that you should have a bump map effect for the veins? It seems to me that the veins are submerged beneath the outer layer of an eye, and are therefore visible, but only as color not as bump. I could be wrong about this, but I think it is so due to all the eye photos Ive seen.

…submerged beneath the outer layer of an eye…

VEIN NOR: The veins were a bit much, however I left a little bit of nor in

…And I don’t like this reddy area near the iris (on the left side )

I cleaned up the texture a bit remove veins on that side.

iris is that it is a photo of a real eye and therefore contains unnecessary reflections and bright spots

I painted out reflection in texture with Gimp.

QUESTION:
How can I get the tranparent layer to reflect similiarly to the non tranparent part. I’m getting no mirror even though it set to 1.0. In the image below the sea scape is not reflected by the transparent section of the eye. I’m using Yafray.
http://peterdunnn.homeip.net/seaEye.jpg

the iris looks flat.
when ever light hits the eye it illuminates the iris and the color apear brilliant and glowing. for me that is quite tuff to do in blender but would be the missing piece.

Working on my Clinton retouched a few irises, thought others may find them useful starting points:
