Pixar topology

Hello all,

I am still in the learning stages of blender and actually interested in topology.
I have tried to reproduced the pixar knee topology shown in this video Pixar topo but when I try the same thing in blender my cylinder gets flatened.
Any hoints on how to increase the polycount on the knee while keeping a smooth surface ?
