So I was wondering if there was a way to make smoke/explosion simulations in blender look blocky( like in the lego movie)
Is there any way to do it?
I’d do it with particles - use a cube as the particle witha shader that fades from emission to volumetric and then to transparent. I used that to good effect here:

I haven’t watched the movie so I don’t know, but if you want something that looks "low-poly absurd," metaballs are great fun to play with. (And if you can believe that a plastic toy is a hero-character, it shouldn’t be too hard to believe that the stuff is “smoke.”)
