hi guys,
first post, yay!!!
well, i bought the latest book from the eshop (the essential blender) and i am made a little animation (chapter3 in the book, 1st section, basic animation). i did the rendering part, and i clicked on the button “play.” The rendering part works just fine, (takes a little while, but works) but the Play button brings up a new window that is just black. I left it like that for a while (about 30mins) and nothing happened, didn’t see any animation. just can’t figure that out!!!
i tried it on two computers thinking it is has to do with hardware, but same prob in both.
my specs are: (if needed)
AMD athlon 64 2Ghz, 1.5G ram, Nvidia GeForce 128M.
the second comp is :
Intel Pentium M 1.7Ghz, 1Gram, Intel GM950 integrated (lappy)
both running linux (sabayon in particular)
and both have Compiz disabled (no 3d effects at all).
sorry for the long post and thanx for the help in advance.
well, I am not sure. (as i am sure you can tell, the first time i am playing with blender, 3d in general).
I know i didn’t specify any output format. I just clicked on the “play” button.
Is this the problem?
How do i specify any format for the output?
Thanx in advance
Select Format in F10 Render buttons in the Format tab. Maybe you rendered to a format you don’t have a codec for? Also, after pressing Play try grabbing that window and give it a good shake.
Welcome to Blender, and well done on getting so far already. To be honest I don’t use the Play button very much at all. However, Blender automatically has a render format set for you whern you first start the program so it isn’t that you don’t have a formtat for your render. You can change the format by changing the “format” tap in the render options just to the right of where you hit “play”.
What might be happening is that Blender can’t find the directory you put your renders into, and so can’t play them back. The play button after all jsut finds your renders and shows them as close to the set speed as possible. If it can’t find the renders it can’t play them. Another option is that your renders came out black themselves, which would happen if you didn’t have any lights in your scene (I have done that so many times it’s not even funny), but that is easy to check by just opening one of you renders with an image viewer. If its’ not black, that’s not your problem.
I wouldn’t worry about it much about it, though. The playback is often choppy if you rendered out large images. I would instead get VirtualDub or another free program and render your still image sequence of renders into a full AVI. That way you can show it to everyone you want to.

The render worked fine and they were put on /tmp/0001.jpg thru 0250.jpg (250 frames). and when i click on the animation window it shows at the bottom left “/tmp/0001.jpg” which is the same as where the renders were. so i check manually using a file manager and good enough the renders were in /tmp/ and i found all the frames (250) rendered in that folder.
I will try virtualDUB. and thanx for the warm welcome

i’ll try that after work this afternoon, thanx for the speedy reply.
I’ll post back with the result
In 2.44 under Windows, rendering to and playing back a sequence of JPG images with the PLAY button does not work. It’s a known bug having to do with FFMPEG integration. I don’t know if this happens in the Linux builds, but make sure you’re not rendering animations to JPG. It’s a lousy format for rendering animations anyway–compression artifacts, no alpha. Use PNG or Targa for image sequences.
ok, I tried a lot of formats (PNG, Multilayer, etc…). what worked was AVI RAW. but, it is great.
yay!!! my first animation ever.
thank you guys for the speedy support.
YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
thanx again for bearing my ignorance!
BLENDER FTW!!!
