play synchronized NLA strips while editing one?

I am working on an animation with several objects. Each object’s animation is converted to a NLA strip. So far so good.

When I edit one strip’s animation, I would like to edit this animation curve while synchronized to the NLA animation (because these are interacting objects). However, whenever I edit a strip’s curves (TAB), the NLA timed animation is not shown, so it’s rather impossible to synchronize the edits to the NLA timed one.

How can I edit one strip, and still have the NLA timed animation playing? Seems like an obvious thing, and there’s probably a button to activate this hidden somewhere, but I cannot find it.

Please help!

Anyone? It’s important to be able to time each strip’s individual keys in the graph editor to the overall animation as it is played.

I think using the Dopesheet ( In Dopesheet view ) is more the tool for you. Sadly the NLA is limited by the object-based dependency graph.

Alternatively, you could make different ‘Pose strips’ in the NLA, layer them on top of each other, and tweak the timing with strips themselves. Almost as if your treating the strips like keyframes themselves.

Thanks, Mikahl. I do indeed use the dopesheet , in combination with the curves, to fine-tune the animation. I am just a little bit surprised the NLA does not support playing back the overall animation in sync with the other strips while editing an individual strip - seems like a no-brainer to me.
