playsrtation 3 and SSS

hi

i just read an article about the new ps 3. the said that with nvidias new Reality Synthesizer chip which can calculate HDR images with 128 bit true skin like in hollywood is getting closer onto non pre rendered games.

they said in the demo you even saw the sceleton shining through the body when a string light was placed behind the body.

Really? I thought it was about the gaming experience, and not cheap visual tricks? %|

i dont have the x box or ps 2, i was just kidding.
in terms of technical level microsoft is prasing the xbox better
than it actualy is. and for me visual output is more important
than numbers.

and most games are ported to both systems anyway.

And Sony don’t do that? coughreality enginecough C’mon, it’s marketing.

On a sidenote, I find myself not enjoing many videogames anymore, because it’s all about visuals nowadays. Visuals should enhance your gaming experience, it shouldn’t be the gaming experience.

I hear ya, Bellorum. Forget graphics! Focus on gameplay!

As for graphics, has anyone else seen the engine demo vid for the Unreal 3 engine? It’s awesome.

And how about the visuals for killzone 2 :o!

Has anyone watched the playstation 3 pre-E3 presentation? The realtime hdr lighting and SSS were unbelievable.

as i mentioned i did say i rather prever some visual example than
numbers. for me the image cannot count.

and sorry the best gameplay cannot make up for bad design.
i also did not say the design is the most important part.

i dont even own a ps or xbox.

I’ve been downloading a lot of E3 videos from IGN, and from the tech demos I’ve seen from the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the PS3 owns. Some of the IGN editors said that the Xbox 360 looks a lot like current generation games and not next generation.

The PS3 on the other hand is very amazing. I’ve never seen sub surface scattering done in realtime till i saw that tech demo.

I just hope the Revolution has some really cool tricks up it’s sleeve, because I really appreciate Nintendo.

Yes, the ps3 is going to rock. The hardware eclipses my expectations. It will be the best next generation system. It will give game makers even more freedom and breathing room. And for all those complaining about amazing graphics, go and play “classic” titles like pacman or galaxian with “infinite replayability” and be satisfied for like 10 minutes.

While your at it quit blendering and go draw stick figures and focus on the story.

What about the GameCube? Does it not exist?

Only for ages 4-13. :expressionless:

Sonix.

So true.

…except for Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 1-4, Eternal Darkness, Zelda, etc…

But yes, Nintendo seems so stubborn to follow growing trends.

the game cube games are good for most ages, the only thing that is really boring is to have always the same nintendo characters… no real innovation from nintendo, only recycling.

The other problem is that 60euros per game is a lot.

yeah the ps3 looks impressive.

There are two reasons I got the xbox though… 1 was halo (ok that is irrelevant now), 2 is xbox live…

I don’t see the ps3 offering that sort of online service. And that means it’s behind the times. (from my perspective)

the problem with next-gen consoles is that developping a game costs too much. If you want to make a game character for the unreal engine 3 you need :

  • A low poly model (10-15k poly)
  • A high poly model
  • A diffuse map
  • A specular map
  • A translucence map
  • Special shaders codes
  • Animations.

For a game like quake3 you only needed

  • Low poly model(2k polys)
  • diffuse map
  • animations
  • Special shader codes.

Next gen games costs two or tree time more, and are sold the same price, in the same quantities. Only big studios can afford that. Some say that all that power could be used to develop not so good looking games easier, without having to optimize, but let’s face it, when you pay 50€ the game, you only but the best ones with crazy graphics. Smaller editors won’t be able to develop games for ps3.

What nintendo is doing is creating a console with an easy SDK to reduce developping costs and they hope to attract the small developpers who must concentrate on originality and gameplay to win, rather than graphics and marketting. I think that the revolution will be full of great modest games while all the ‘hits’ will be on PS3.

We will quickly see if game designers can afford to make games that costs 3 times more available only on one console.

Well, I watched Tech TV live from E3 last night and from what I saw of the PS3, it is seriously going to own the gaming industry over the next few years.

The demos were just mindblowingly gorgeous and the real time demos were even better IMO.

I currently own and Xbox and I have to say that I probably won’t change over any time soon, but based on what I saw, I will definitely be looking into it down the road.

i think there is a big problem with the tech dev for games at the moment.

movies like final fantasy pushed the tech limits but the drama in the movie
is so bad. today people are not that crazy about the realism anymore
they focus again on a good drama/story.

i think this will happen with games anyway someday.

It often happened in the past that when a company shows its next gen video console, it was really running on a high power computer like the Mario demo for Nintendo 64 which was really running on a Onyx. It won’t suprise me either if Sony is doing the same thing.
I don’t think that graphics is an issue (I admit I am mistaken. Just look at the sales numbers). These days you get to many visual input and it will still look synthetic. So what if the PS3 has realtime SSS? After a week or two the amazement will wear off and people will stare at the horizon for the next gen video game again. Like I said, you can’t handle too much visual input. Like a racing game that uses HDRI and realtime raytracing. So what? It has to playable at first. The goal is to get the car over the finish line first. You won’t have time to appreciate the graphics anyway. So what the if the graphics is so advanced that you can see the football players sweating? If you stop to wonder at the marvel of the graphics, you will get tackled. That’s why I like to play old games (like in MAME) because you won’t get distracted by the graphics. But don’t get me wrong, I still like the modern consoles too. I beat the living daylights out of you with Tekken. But I enjoyed it a lot too if I just watch the running demo or watch other people playing so I can wonder at the graphics and figure out how the hell did they pulled that off. And I swear, if Nintendo release one Mario game on their next gen console, I will crash a plane on their building. I don’t care if Mario is realtime radiosisty, SSS, HDRI, deep shadow maps and so on.

I’ve yet to see any game play movies so don’t start the gratuitous wang sucking just yet. Those “cinematics” are still cinematics, the Fight Night 2 is not game play, Killzone is not game play. Actually I just watched the batman begins trailer with some game play footage, and it looks on par with the Xbox 360.

Don’t get too excited, Sony are pulling the wool over your eyes!!

The Xbox 360 showed only in-game footage. Sony are showing you PRE-RENDERED sequences. Killzone is not in-game, it was Pre-Rendered by a company in the UK.
Sony know the masses will think this is in-game and make the Xbox 2 look dated before it’s released. Microsoft are being staight with you. Sony are scum for doing this.

Actually, the Fight Night stuff was actual game play, in real time. It was confirmed on the Tech TV E3 special that I watched last night.

I agree that Kill Zone did not look like actual game play, but the others sure did.
