Please help

so is ther any advice anyone can give me on how to rig this guys mouth… it’s wierd

I am actually not even sure how it is supposed to animate

You need to figure that out first- neither you nor we can rig something if we don’t know what the intended range of motion is

its hard cos i didn’t really have a 3d reference. it was just a drawing that i did

Spot on, first thing to do is ask yourself what this character will be doing/saying. From there you can sketch out the necessary poses & expressions. Finally, work on making a rig that allows all of it.

What are you making it for? short film, game engine?

I think it’s a really cool design, you’re off to a good start, whatever you plan on doing.

short film.

he has such a flat face that he acually dosn’t have a jaw, so i am trying to find a similarly shaped character for movement reference

so i am thinking, to make something that is actually functional i need to make the jaw just move and not rotate, and focus on the lips and not the jaw. this is my first character and my first time rigging so i don’t have any experience in mouths.

I’d look at sharks, particularly the hammerhead variety.

my character has a overbite and hammerhead sharks do not. i think what i am looking for is a lip rig that will animate the face flat, if that makes any sense

Perhaps start with some facial shapekeys to experiment with and if you get what you want for phonemes, set up driver bones to get the shapes and by then you’ll have a better idea of the actual rigging.

thanks i will give it a shot
