I don’t want to start a Blender Wishlist throead, but there’s this thing that keeps on happening, and I guess it must happen to a lot of people…
You’ve just rendered an animation, and you press PLAY, but you’re finger slips and you press RENDER again. You’ve just deleted the file you spent 5 hours rendering!
OR
To stop that from happening you unclick the OVERWRITE button in the OUTPUT tab. So now you click RENDER and wait - and you find that none of the rendering has been saved as there was allready a file with that name.
Can we have a little popup “save over filename?” box pop up like normal software? Or infact like what happens when you press CTRL S?
OK, I’ve said my piece. Thankyou for listening, I will now go on calmly with my day.
You must render to imagessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Really, you should not render to video files directly. Most other applications don’t even have that feature. What happens if Blender crashes or Windows reboots because it must urgently update? There’s many other reasons why your render could fail (power outage, overheating, cosmic radiation, cats…).
Also, I’m not sure that other applications would prompt you to overwrite the existing render. That would be extremely annoying when (as it is common) performing frequent re-renders.
As you point out, Blender has all the tools you need to deal with this, you just need to use them. Adding potentially annoying popups must be done for very good reasons and this isn’t one.
Yeah - I guess you’re right, but I also use Blender for a video editor, as it still seems the best option on Linux, and I have the exact same problem. OK, thank you for allowing me to rant anyway.
